I picked this initially for my form to listen to during reading time on Tuesdays, but changes to our timetable made that impossible and so I decided to finish it myself. Odd was an amazing character - assertive yet considerate, impetuous yet careful, brave yet realistic. His interactions with the Gods were intriguing and humorous because he did not let fear curb his tongue. The plot was straightforward, but littered with fascinating mythology that made me want to pause the audio book to traverse Google. The climax of the story, Odd's gift of beauty to the Frost Giant and the Frost Giant's surrender, was inspired which pleased me because I don't like books that offer a magical solution which defies all previous world-building; Odd used his brain and his resources to succeed in his task and that made his success all the more satisfying. The final chapter was gratifying too, when Odd returned to his village and found his mother living in his father's old hut and decided to take her back to Scotland - I'd be interested in that sequel! Overall, this was a swift but thoroughly enjoyable read and I'll be sharing it with future classes.
A wonderful tale that illustrates the enduring power of myths, kindness, and sharp wits.

I really enjoyed this little book- it felt both true to the mythology and updated for modern readers.

Neil Gaiman does it again! A wonderfully fun and adventurous children's novel.

Enjoyable if slight. As usual, Gaiman’s use of mythological characters—in this case, those wacky old Norse Gods—is fantastic. I just wish his human character, Odd, had been less of a cypher. His journey didn’t feel as meaningful as it could have since he was mostly such a blank: more of a Shadow, alas, and less of a Richard Mayhew. (I love Richard, okay? I will totally arm wrestle over his superiority to all other slightly befuddled Neil Gaiman protagonists. RICHARD FOREVER.)
Ahem. Anyway, fun story; not quite great. WHEN ARE YOU WRITING ANOTHER ADULT NOVEL, NEIL?
