Fine, but nothing special. You might enjoy this more if you know Aeschylus and Euripides and their works.

I understand that there is a lot of contextual messaging I need to go back and analyse but this play for me personally really peaks in the first half and the section with the slapstick fight. The agons felt as if they dragged but I still appreciate that I cannot see how this would have been authentically produced in the 5th century so I'm missing out on a lot of the contemporary visual and verbal humour. Still, it was surprisingly engaging and still relatable despite its age as a text.

I think it would have been so much funnier if I watched the play rather than read it. (And if I knew a little bit more context...)

I'm having a quality time with Aristophanes. Impeccably bizarre vibes. The insight into Grecian litcrit is something worth pondering also.

Are there contemporary reimaginings of this? The narrative framework here is fantastic, and I think could be reworked with interesting results.

I admit I had high hopes for this after reading Lysistrata. It started out alright, the jokes were funny and I was interested enough in the plot. But you know, after about twenty dick and fart jokes, they get kind of dull. I think Aristophanes would disagree, but it was just a bit much. It would've been much better had the play been much shorter, but it just kept dragging on and on and I was just done at the end.

This is much more of a 3.75! I found parts of this play charming and hilarious. Particularly the actual trip to Hades and the shifting roles of Dionysus and Xanthus. The battle for best tragic poet between Euripedes and Aeschylus was a bit lengthy, but perhaps would have played better on stage. Overall, very enjoyable and humorous.
