This book touched my heart, made me so emotional, and reminded me of why I need to read more indigenous work. This was inspirational, and if you read it, don’t forget to have a pen and paper or a highlighter to record your favorite quotes because there will be many.

While reading it and when I finished, gos metgot i piniti-hu. It made me think about my life as a CHamoru and how should I move forward. I appreciated the raw honesty about life, grief, and colonization. Especially when Aguon involved true accounts from other people from other parts of the world. I also liked the footnotes since it was like he was showing more acknowledgements to the people who inspired him. It was also like talking with a friend. When you're both talking about a topic, but oftentimes you trail off track (yet sticking nearby to the main discussion) before reeling it back in.

It was a very short book. As a CHamoru reading another CHamoru's precious work, I loved it all. I was able to closely relate to some things he wrote about.

Reflections on childhood, colonization, climate justice, and native life. Hopeful pieces that urge readers to chase freedom. Aguon’s powerful perspective will have you feeling every emotion at once.

I think I was expecting more? And the footnotes threw me off, you know a scholar wrote this book. But Julian Aguon really captures the importance of preserving the Chamorro culture and environment.

A lovely collection of poems and essays. I think I was a little disappointed because the reviews on the book jacket promised this short book would change my life, and…not really. But I enjoyed it immensely.
