I found the narrator, and really all of the characters, to be whiny, unlikable, and hypocritical. This book was predictable in its excess. Nothing about it seemed to make any sort of point.
Literary coke trip
I don't know exactly why I loved this book but I did. I really did. I think it was just really easy to identify with the main character. Not that I always agreed with her choices or would have made the same ones but she was so well written as a character that I understood and empathize with her. In fact, the Book seemed almost hyper focused on the characters themselves rather than plot and it worked really well. I don't know how to explain this book but it was really good.

Well I will say that I feel like I need rehab after reading this book. The things Alley does and goes thru all in hopes that walker reade becomes her in to pursuing her literary dream is way more than I ever would've done. And knowing this is based on a real experience makes me wonder have i just never wanted anything that badly. Or am I too much of a rule follower to have never even been faced with the debauchery in this book. But the real question. Who is Larry Lucas?
I wish I had read this without knowing that it was inspired by the author's time as Hunter S Thompson's personal assistant. It left me wondering what were actually events, and which were flights of fancy. I also spent too much time trying to figure out who the famous characters were based on, if any.
Still, it is a good book. I would probably give it a 3.5 instead of a four because it seemed rushed at the end.

Gonzo Girl by Cheryl Della Pietra is an interesting novel that is similar in style to the mad cap literary greats such as Hunter S. Thompson, Kurt Vonnegut and Lester Bangs; poetically verbose and a little bit screwball. The basic premise is that wannabe writer Alley Russo has landed her dream job working with respected and revered writer Walker Reade. However, her respect slowly dwindles like sand through an hourglass as she realises that he is washed up and is writing sheer nonsense. One bad decision to alter his work leads to a world of worry.
Alley is quickly ensconced in a world so far away from her comfortable life as the precious only daughter of a close knit Italian family, she is rapidly surrounded by people living a debauched lifestyle; rather than shy away from this Valhalla of decadence Ally joins in with gusto.
Gonzo Girl is a great read and is a nosy peak into such a warped way of life. Whilst I did go through the book rather rapidly I did feel that some of Walker Reade’s crazier moments could have been edited out and it would have still had the same impact. What is great about Gonzo Girl is the astounding voice of Cheryl Della Pietra and how she has managed to create such an evocative image of time and place.

Totally fun, fast-paced and surprisingly relatable. I say surprisingly because I am not a massive Hunter S. Thompson fan. I read the book because I've worked with Cheryl and was frankly fascinated that someone I actually knew had had this crazy brush with lit celebrity. What I was really pleased to find was how the ambitious main character, Alley, manages the what-do-I-do-now-that-I'm-out-of-college problem...in this bizarre setting.
It's also just refreshing to read a book involving tons of drugs in which there are no massive repercussions or moral judgments. (And there's even a hilarious line about how Alley decides she'll take the mandated drug use at Reade/Thompson's house one day at a time--kind of the opposite of AA.) It all made me a little nostalgic for that age.

Okay, so it may be that I love Hunter S. Thompson because we share a birthday together, or it may be because I love his writing, or may be because....he's just an awesome dude and I'm still mad that he died (killed himself). But....as this was interesting that the author made this into a fictional book, I wished she would have written a memoir about HER time with Hunter, than make a fictional character that's based on loose facts. I would have found the story more appealing. Kinda bummed with this one.
If you felt The Devil Wears Prada just didn't have enough booze, drugs or guns, this ones for you!
