This book made me cry the first time I read it when I was 14. Now, the second time I've read it, at 22 years old, all I can think is "Teens don't talk like this!"

Still iconic.

I cried really hard. Revisiting this book (one of the first books I read in elementary school) was a really emotional experience that I'm glad I had. This book starts out kinda intentionally cringy, Hazel was very isolated and had this sense of superiority over everyone that was funny to read, knowing I have been this person before because of my own illnesses, and sometimes continue to be like that. (Although I have toned it down, to the relief of everyone I love) Then John Green decided to assault my feelings with the loveable characters, frustrating issues in their lives, and eventual loss that we as the readers grieve over as well. It was a tough read but not in a bad way, and I stayed up for a whole night to finish it, something I haven't done in years. Thanks John Green for messing up the sleep schedule I have worked hard to fix. This book is a modern classic and I'm glad I can say I have read it.

Pleasantly surprised re-reading this 7 years after initially reading it. I definitely got different things from it this time around. Honestly, it’s a likeable story that you can enjoy even if you don’t understand all of the literary references or poetic clauses, but if you do it certainly enhances your experience. I think books like this - particularly those that are turned into movies that young people (particularly young women) enjoy, can get a reputation for being juvenile or unintelligent, but this book definitely does not lack intelligence. It reads almost like a movie so it is an easy, quick-paced read. Would recommend it to pretty much anyone.
