The main character is deeply flawed but still I was rooting for her to get her shit together. It's a fun read if you like horses and can understand the kind of love and awe they inspire.

I listened to the audiobook & if I had been reading the book instead, I would not have imagined such a hostile, shrill tone in everything the main character said. I was starting to despise this woman about 3/4 of the way through the book. Having said that, though, I did enjoy the story.

The story wasn't as personally interesting to me as [b:Water for Elephants|43641|Water for Elephants|Sara Gruen|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170161179s/43641.jpg|3441236], and there were times when I got frustrated with the main character, but there is no denying Gruen is a wonderful writer, so she kept me interested anyhow. :) Definitely enough that I will be sure to check out the sequel as well.

Characters not that likable. Plot not too interesting.

I think you definitely have to know your horse stuff in order to understand, and perhaps enjoy this book. And it seems like when it rains, it pours for the poor protagonist (who can get whiny and annoying pretty fast and spends much of the novel drinking, hungover, or sedated). I don't think anything goes right until the last twenty pages, when things are suddenly wrapped up quickly and quietly. It's not a very happy read, and I found myself wanting to slap the protagonist a few times, but it's not horrible.

Other than her using too many horse/riding terms that I didn't know the meaning of it was a great book. I'll have to find the second one

It was a decent and fast read. Very character driven. The character seems very real. She not just someone you root for but you get annoyed at her, feel sympathetic, etc. Just like a real friend. My one pet peeve is all the equestrian vocabulary. You get the gist of it but I was lost at times. Overall decent read. I would recommend as an airplane or beach book.

Yeoch.

I read Water for Elephants, and while I didn't find it the life-changing book that others had seemed to - I didn't hate it. It was different and entertaining, so I figured a book in that vein about horses couldn't go wrong.

Wow, how wrong I was.

There is not one redeeming quality about the main character - Annemarie. Not one. Everyone else in the book deserved better and I could not bring myself to give a hoot whether she got her happily ever after or not - which of course she did - despite being horrific to everyone she came across.

I have recently decided that I am not going to read books I don't like just for the sake of finishing what I have started. I took the rest of Sara Gruen's books off of my to-read shelf and I don't feel bad about it.
