Woah this book was crazy and dark and unexpected. The writing is beautiful and poetic but the story??? Very different. These 13-year-old boys have a very strange and twisted view of the world and I lowkey would not recommend this book.

certain moments captured me and made me reflect, felt like there is a lot to consider pertaining to the characters beliefs and why they are that way, but the book itself didn’t hold my attention as well as i had hoped. I enjoyed the dynamics and the setting, but felt like it dragged even though it was under 200 pages.

- Nihilism vs heroism
- Idealism vs maturity
- Freudian superego derived from the worship of the mothers
- The flaws of fathers
- Japanese westernization (Fusako) vs traditional values (Ryuji’sdesire to conquer death and the Great Cause)

Noburu is definitely one of the more peculiar characters I've discovered in fiction. It's my third Mishima and it's interesting how he manages to infuse his recurring theme of hypermasculinity into an adolescent character, much like in Confessions of a Mask while also describing family dynamics and the allure of mystic of the sea.
