Oddly enough, the horror movie of the same title is eerily similar WITHOUT crediting this author. Hmmm....

Good first chapter, the rest of the book is a waste of the paper it's printed on. What a mess.

A fantastic, intense adventure. So much went into this book: world building, fictional science, etc.
I really enjoyed flashing between the different perspectives and there was so much to absorb, I sometimes read whole sections twice.
The ending unfortunately felt so rushed and left me with questions and no answers. I see there is a second book in the series, so maybe there will be more resolution in those pages.

Very different from the film adaption. The first half of the book felt more like a military thriller. I nearly DNF'ed it as I was pretty bored. It started to pick up midway as you started to learn more about the "demons" and their history.  I found the cave expedition very unrealistic and it took me out of the story a few times.

Long ago in the days of mall bookshops, my wife and I were both pursuing vacation reading material and each of us separately homed in on a copy of The Descent. Its become one of those books I re-read periodically, joining an esteemed list comprising The Lord of the Rings (to include the Silmarillion), The Stand and Lucifer's Hammer. Its far, far superior, deeper, darker and grander than either of the two movies it spawned. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor. Dive in and enjoy.

Yes, I definitely picked up on some racism in the book. Super shitty. However, there wasn't a huge amount of racist comments (that I noticed) so I kept reading. Definitely, racist subtext though. Super cool book otherwise. It slightly put me in mind of the Long Earth books. Just the idea of a whole other world closer than we think. I haven't really found any books that scare me but this one definitely creepy. Some of the jumping back and forth from character perspectives was a bit jarring but overall it added some dimensionality to how the events in the story were impacting people all over the world. I think the beginning of the book definitely was creepier/scarier than the later parts. I found myself feeling sad for both sides of the "war". I enjoyed the book overall but for the people that don't like it I can see where it falls short. I saw a lot of reviews talking about the science in it isn't accurate or real. My response: It's fiction, you need to have some suspension of disbelief.

Read this book based on a reddit recommendation.

This book would have been entertaining enough (there were things I liked about it, the setting specifically) but the weird sexual scenes that started popping up at chapter sixteen was so unnecessary and weird. And the scene with the young boy ruined the entire book for me and I wish I’d never read it. So. I do not recommend.
