My Summary: What happens when a regular 30-something man with barely anything to his name inherits a billion-dollar supervillain business from his estranged uncle? In short, organized chaos. Charlie undertakes this business with a trial by fire and quickly becomes a starter villain who finds himself in a war against his uncle's arch-nemeses: more supervillains. He will have to use every tool at his disposal--including talking spy cats, unionized dolphins, a lava pit, and laser death rays--to keep his uncle's business alive.
My Thoughts: Starer Villain is one of those books that has such a fresh narrative paired with humorous dialogue that just draws you in right form the start. I think a lot of readers can relate to the main character, Charlie, who suddenly finds himself in charge of something he has no business being in charge of--his uncle's billion-dollar supervillain business. All of a sudden, Charlie has henchmen, talking cat sidekicks, and laser death rays at his disposal. None of which he knew existed before inheriting his uncle's business. Charlie is continuously put in situations that are both highly dangerous and ridiculously hilarious. As the story moves along, you'll keep thinking you have everything figured out only to learn that, like Charlie, you know absolutely nothing.
I'm amazed that John Scalzi was able to fit in such a fun and engaging plot along with plenty of comedic one-liners in such a short novel. Starter Villain is definitely a book I will be revisiting and will continue to recommend it to fans of science-fiction, fantasy, villains, ridiculous plots, plentiful humor, and animal sidekicks.

This was a delightful book! Fun ideas, original concept, and just toeing the line of ridiculous. The beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up and then didn’t stop. The cats were great, and the ending too!
