This book is an incredible read. Filled with a personal account of a disaster at high altitude, the author's feelings and regrets over the result of the catastrophe, and the rich history of the mountain the author set out to climb. The book is overflowing with knowledge of Sherpa culture and what the journey to the summit of Everest really demands. Jon Krakauer's own guilt and admission of things he could have done differently/not at all, really add to the tragedy of the 1996 Everest Disaster. A book I've read and reread, and will most likely return to in the future.

This was an incredibly well-written and heart-wrenching first person account of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster by the author.  Once I got to the summit chapters, I quite literally could not stop listening.  Krakauer's attention to detail was well balanced with the appropriate disclaimers that his and others' memories of the incident are not entirely reliable given the high altitude at which they occurred.  His perspective of events provides an interesting commentary on why climbers choose to tackle such high-altitude peaks and the dangers of the commercialization of Everest to inexperienced and expert climbers alike.  I would rate this 5 stars, except that I know there is some criticism and controversy around Krakauer's portrayal of the events that should be addressed further.  I look forward to reading Anatoli Boukreev's counter to this work as well.

I have harbored a special interest in Everest and have been a wannabe climber ever since reading a young adult series in the 6th grade. Jon does a great job melding his personal experience with a journalistic account of the 1996 Everest disaster. I listened to this book in 2 days. Excellent.

Probably my favorite book ever. I could reread this anytime any where and get lost in it. Hell, I could probably open it up to any page and take off from there. Krakauer is such an engaging storyteller and while this book makes me NEVER want to climb Everest it has given me an understanding of the people who feel called to do so.
