I don't often read romantic suspense books these but I do like them and this book sounded interesting.

Fatal Affair is a good book that is quick and easy read that I was able to read in one sitting. It is very well written and it did keep me reading.

This book is the first book in the Fatal series and I can't wait to read the next book.

A solid mystery and an engaging romance, however, several unrealistic elements and plot holes detract from the overall effect.

The murder mystery is well-developed from the initial gruesome discovery of the corpse through the questioning of suspects and the ultimate revelation of the killer's identity. Unfortunately, the secondary stories are not as well fleshed out. There is a significant lack of detail concerning Sam's past relationships with Nick and with her ex-husband as well as the events leading up to her return to active duty. This makes it difficult to follow the complex storylines and hampers the attempt to merge them all into a cohesive whole.

In addition, the way Sam is treated by the police higher ups is not true to life nor is Nick's insistence on seducing Sam when it is evident that there are ethical issues with her job. These circumstances required me to suspend my disbelief more than should be necessary in a romantic suspense novel.

That said, the characters are strong and likable. Sam is a take no prisoners investigator but still manages to maintain important connections with friends and family - her banter with her partner, Freddie, is one of the highlights of the book. Nick is a loyal and honorable friend but also an imperfect hero who struggles with the idea that Sam is a skilled detective capable of handling herself in dangerous situations. They have great chemistry but their "I love yous" are a little too quick and saccharine sweet, especially considering this is only the first book in the series.

Despite the above mentioned issues, this is an entertaining read that hooks you from the start and is difficult to put down.

Quick read, but a great book. A solid mystery/romance and I fell in love with both Sam and Nick. Looking forward to the next one.

Really enjoyed this book.

The murderer sort of surprised me. That was quite good.

The actual murders were awful but very well written and clever.

The romance sort of distracted from the suspense part I got that into that plot. However I did enjoy the romance as well
funny inspiring lighthearted mysterious relaxing sad tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

The audiobook is super good. I enjoyed this as much as I enjoy police procedural tv shows with a sprinkling of romance, except that I feel this has WAY too many sexy times wedged in between a very serious crime mystery. Not trying to be a prude but it felt unnecessary to do like 5 sex scenes in between the investigation because it breaks the flow of the story quite a bit for me. Especially because most of the middle is spent focused on the couple then at the last 1/8 of the book they rush with the crime mystery and have bodies falling like flies all of a sudden.

On the plus side, the main characters/couple are/is incredibly likable. I’ll continue this when I’m in the mood.

The timeline for the relationship to grow was rushed, but the action, adventure, and mystery pulled me along.

This was "okay"! It moved pretty slow causing me to have to skim a bit. I did not figure out who the murderer was until it was revealed. I did not care for Sam much at all. She had too many issues and made MANY bad decisions in her personal and work life. Nick was the saving grace being a great love interest. He was all in while Sam was too aloof! It's not so enjoyable when you are wishing the one character would just dump the love interest character. The whole Peter situation seemed out of place like it was filler material to stretch out the book.

A well written whodunnit. Well developed characters, and a twisted plot of secondary characters make this a good story that unravels nicely. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Both the romance and murder mystery aspects of the book were pretty lame. I would have stopped reading it early on, but the reviews were really good so I kept thinking it would get better. It didn’t.
