This had sort of a lovely bones or something like that quality about it, but not as good. here is a seven year old girl who has been mute since she was four after witnessing something and now she and her best friend are missing. we see the story from the points of view of the little girl, her brother, her mom, the police, etc. I love books that jump around and give different perspectives. some people know more than others. the story moved quickly and was sad without being utterly depressing (like lovely bones was) yet although i enjoyed it, it was missing something. there were a lot of unlikeable characters, too. i did not like that mom, and of course, not the dad either. i'm not sure who i liked, maybe the little girl, definitely her brother. Anyway, this book is definitely worth reading, but just fell a little short of its potential.

Got me back into reading again. Some predictability but gripping nonetheless.

I enjoyed the suspenseful nature of this book and think it was well written. But I have to say I agree with a few other reviewers' critiques about Calli's therapy. If she was so advanced in her writing, why didn't her family utilize that to help them communicate with her? And her father's character development left much to be desired.

I was really impressed that this was Heather Gudenkauf's debut novel and I enjoyed it more than some of her other novels. I took off half a star because I didn't like Louis' family's plot line and I felt like it didn't really add much to the story. It made me disappointed in him at the end rather than keeping me rooting for him.

It makes me crazy when misdirection happens because of withheld information, and this story includes a child who has voluntary mutism because of childhood trauma and so can't provide information when information is necessary. Also the trauma of another child is used as a mechanism of the plot and it's just... disrespectful to the character.

On my TBR since April 2010.
