I know myself. I know what I will and won’t read. 1984 by George Orwell always felt like such a daunting prospect, I genuinely thought it would never happen. That is, until I found the graphic novel edition.
I don’t really know how to write a review for this, if I’m honest. The feelings it evokes are mostly confusion. There’s also this horrible sense of familiarity in the events and thoughts unfolding in the story.
The parallels between what Orwell was getting at and the current state of the world are striking and frankly, terrifying. There was one panel in particular that hit hard. I was able to draw a direct comparison between what was happening in this “fictional dystopia” and things the current New Zealand government is doing. That’s not a happy realisation to make.
I don’t think reading the graphic novel has done me any disservice compared to the original. If you’re like me and 1984 is something you want to read but find too intimidating, I’d absolutely recommend this version.

I first read the written version as a student in class, and while of course I understood it, there’s nothing like reading it now as an adult with adult eyes. This graphic version was a perfect adaptation! The parallels between this book and our current US government are so strong.
I think that it lost a bit of the magic of 1984, that feeling of confusion.
But, it's a really nice book, loved the end panels tho.

I wanted to give 1984 another chance since it is such a classic, but I wanted to try it as a graphic novel to make it easier to understand. The art work absolutely helped and I understood the concepts so much more than when I read the book 25 years ago. I still don’t like the book but the graphic novel is a very accessible alternative to the book.

This graphic novel or Orwell’s 1984 is absolutely beautiful. It is dark, compelling and immerses you in Oceania and the world of Big Brother. The story is incredible and the imagery matches it perfectly. I’d recommend it to anyone.
