While spending the summer in North Carolina, Ollie meets Will at the lake. Though they immediately hit it off and spend as much time together as they can, both know Ollie will be returning to California in the fall. But suddenly Ollie's parents decide the family will stay out east in order to help care for his ailing aunt, and on Ollie's first day of school he sees Will...who acts like he doesn't exist.

A sweet, more or less believable teen drama/romance. I appreciated that, in addition to Ollie and Will, the supporting cast were fleshed-out in their own ways. I awwwed. The resolution was maybe a little too pat, and some aspects of the plot are a bit heavy if you're just seeking a light-hearted beach read, but all in all cute and enjoyable.

I recognize this book's flaws. But boy, was it a fun read.

I cannot say when I recently laughed at a YA narrator like this: Ollie was sassy and had the most ridiculous inner thoughts, and he completely stole the show. I could have done without the romantic drama and tension, just give me a story about Ollie babysitting his cousins and navigating friendships and sexuality. If it wasn't obvious from my previous statement, the romance really didn't wow me for a few reasons. I didn't like Will as a character or a love interest; to put it nicely, he sucked. But I also feel like the way this book is written (mostly in the present but with little glimpses into the past) made it harder for me to get behind the relationship. This could have been executed well, but it seemed rather incomplete. I was reading an ARC, so maybe there will be some changes made to the published version. The rose gold trio was a lot of fun, and I loved seeing Ollie interact with his aunt and cousins. I do wonder at the tone, though, because we've got this lighter, more comedic vibe going on for a good portion of the book, but right beside that is cancer, and these didn't always weave seamlessly together.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm too old to be reading about teenagers 😭
The book itself would've been fun if I was 17/18 but not 24

Thank you Netgalley and Wednesday Books for providing me with an E-Arc in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I thought I would truly love this book. Especially being a gay love story and dealing with some hard hitting topics.

However, this book did nothing unique in my opinion. It read like a lifetime movie. I hated the main romance until pretty much the ending. I found it to be almost worthy of worst relationship ever read. However, it did somewhat redeem itself.

I know that this book covered some tough topics and I understand what those topics were. However, the way that Ollie is treated by a certain character drove me insane. It was manipulative and mentally abusive, I'm sure it could've been showcased in a different way without the mental abuse. I know the world isn't perfect and things don't always work out. I know what it feels like to be scared to explain your sexuality to someone. However, never would it be ok to treat someone like this.
This was the downfall of my rating. I could not see past this nor be ok with it.

All in all it was still a decent book that followed a format. I think the authors writing is really well done and I would be interested in some of their other work.
