“And I wonder for a moment why I have spent all my time worried about losing things when there is so much here.”

Carrie Soto is unlikable as a person and TJR does a great job of this, which is the difference between a plain annoying character, and one whose growth you’re invested in who repeatedly frustrates you. This was my least favorite of TJR’s universe however, probably because I cannot relate to the characters in this book. I was much more invested in Javier Soto.
The most emotional part of the book for me was when he passed. I do feel enough time was spent with him that reader develops an attachment to him and so the death hurts more. The part I felt the most love for Carrie was during this time, when she was about to achieve her dream, their dream, without him there to see it. I feel TJR writes grief very well.

“This is the tiniest beginning of a terrible, beautiful life.”

Taylor Jenkins Reid did it again. I'm continually impressed with the depth of feeling she's able to unearth in her characters. I am NOT a sports memoir type reader, and I absolutely loved this fictionalized account of a top performing athlete. I saw myself in all the characters. Will definitely re-read.

This book surprised me in the best way. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did, but Carrie's story had me completely hooked. Even though I'm not a tennis expert, I thought the technical stuff might bore me, but it was actually really well done and not overwhelming.

Carrie's journey in the book was awesome. She's unapologetically herself, and not afraid to speak her mind. I loved seeing her journey over the years. And the way her relationship with her dad evolved was something special. It felt real and added a lot to the story.

Overall, it was a great read!

I consumed the audiobook as a read-along accompaniment to the text based book.

I very much enjoyed the book, and the story content.

For the audio aspects:
Starting off the audio narration makes the book much more interesting and fun.
After a while, through the length of the book, there were times that it seemed a bit too much.

One voice-character in particular (this was a full cast narration) was rather annoying.
I felt the voice that was used depicted a little too much of the character's personality. I feel like some more of this should have been left for the "reader /listener" to paint themselves through the actual dialogue that that character was using, rather than having a voice act which was too exaggerated.

I really did appreciate the narration of the Spanish dialogue. It made the whole story much more authentic. I would certainly have missed the essence of it had I soley relied on myself, (as a non-Spanish speaker), to read it off of the text version.

Having the Spanish narrated also helped me as a non-Spanish speaker, to make sense of that part of the content.

Overall, I much enjoyed the audiobook. As a read-along, I felt it added interest to the book.
