I read this for a reading challenge that asked you to reread a childhood favorite and I wound up a little sad that I hadn’t left this to nostalgia. It didn’t hold up very well; the main characters aren’t particularly likable and the central mystery and its solution don’t feel well grounded. I think, as an adult reading this, my concerns were very different than my thoughts when I read it as a child, and as such, it didn’t so much capture my imagination as it didn’t my angst about aspects that a kid would never be worried about. So… better left to the vault. Now I know.
