With children's books, the age you first read the book greatly influences how you enjoy it. This book didn't have the whimsy to catch my attention. And I'm too old for its message to resonate. Or maybe I'm not open to it at this point in time. Claudia Kincaid decides to run away from her family to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With her brother, Jamie, she takes on the "adventure of their lives." The book then follows her plan as she travels by train to NYC and proceeds to spend nights hiding in the museum. Claudia wants to be different or special and believes her trip will make her that. She learns along the way, as the author states in the afterword, "The greatest adventures lie not in running away but in looking inside, and the greatest discovery is not finding out who made a statue but in finding ou what makes you.
Loved it! Claudia decides to run away to the New York Metropolitan Art Museum and take James, one of her younger brothers, with her. She's the planner, and he's the financial controller. It's an adventure! Taking baths in a fountain and sleeping in a Victorian bed at night, they spend their days following school groups. Claudia strongly believes in learning something new each day. She becomes focused on learning the secret to who sculpted a 2' angel. That's where Mrs. Frankweiler comes into the story. It's a cute story. I highly recommend.

I read this as a child and enjoyed listening to the audiobook with my daughter. This story holds up...she is 10 and was really into it.

I think this is what every kid kind of dreams of when he just wants to go on an adventure. I certainly have.

A cute, artsy, and illustrated story about two siblings who hide out in a museum and learn more about themselves...and about a mystery surrounding Michelangelo.
