This cover showed up on my radar because I'm on CS Pacat's mailing list and was highly recommended; I'm weak and trashy, I bought it.

(TW: this manga deals frequently with/is generally irresponsible abt sexual abuse trauma, although not in the typical "rape as love" category)

The manga chapters aren't entirely usual, in that they tend to alternate flashbacks (sometimes with different main characters, although they are all player characters in the same yakuza universe) with the main plot/love story of Yashiro and Doumeki.

For a series that is ostensibly so focused on sex, it's the tender moments and the aesthetics that really take up the majority of the page. The art is gorgeous and occasionally daring (in angle and form), in pursuit of the sensual rather than the sexual.

My favorite story is the first one we get between Kuga & Kageyama-- it's a good introduction to the world (and to Yashiro!)-- as well as having some of my favorite panels & scenes (also, perhaps pettily, the love story is short and RESOLVED)

5.0

Reading the summary as copied from mangaupdates made me laugh. It isn't wrong, actually, but what's missing is the bit where it mentions that this is one of the best BL manga ever written.

Yashiro is a yakuza boss who is also seriously masochistic. Domeki is his new bodyguard who is impotent and joined Yashiro's group mostly because he liked the way Yashiro looks.

While these are the basic facts, writing them down like this makes this manga sound nowhere near as good as it is. First of all, it shouldn't be dismissed - or taken - as a simple kink story. The way these two - both deeply screwed up - men interact is so different from 99.9% of all other stories I've read. Yashiro is an incredible fascinating character, and "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu", one of this story's prequels that luckily is also included in this volume, never fails to floor me. (I actually really like that "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu" and "Don't stay gold" frame the main story.) Since "Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai" isn't finish yet, I have to reserve a final judgment, but "Tadayoedo Shizumazu, Saredo Naki mo Sezu" is definitely one of the most powerful stories I've ever read in any medium.

This isn't the kind of story you just read and that's that. It's the kind of story that makes you think about people, how they become what they are, how difficult it is to let yourself love sometimes. It's really, really worth reading.

Edited on June 28, 2016: Rereading this and impressed by Yashiro all over again. He is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever read. This is a superb manga.

Very dark and extremely fucked up but also really compelling?? Definitely mind the trigger warnings.
I was very confused in the beginning tho. There could have been more transitions between some of the panels/pages to make things clearer. Also there’s either some typos or translation errors.
