I love His Dark Materials--like, collect-editions-of-the-books, probably-will-name-my-daughter-Lyra-if-I-have-one-someday love it--but man have I been disappointed in its offerings lately. The short story Serpentine was just meh, the companion Book of Dust series is going in a weird direction I'm not jiving with, and I don't even know what to make of this, a book that took me approximately fifteen minutes to read in its entirety. It's a physically very beautiful volume, and Pullman alludes, in his author's note at the beginning, that its contents will eventually be of significance to the plot of the (unpublished, with not even a pub date set) third book in the Book of Dust trilogy. But the fact of the matter is that these are scraps of thoughts, half-baked ideas, that I don't feel gave me much of anything. A couple of them about Will as an adult were interesting, since he's fallen off the map in The Book of Dust (which takes place exclusively in Lyra's universe), but this all feels like it would have been better as, say, a blog post from Pullman. Not a book that costs (according to my edition) thirteen pounds.
