Blurb complaint: gave way too much away =_= I'm glad I haven't been reading the blurbs before reading the actual book - going in blind was way more interesting, not to mention more satisfying to unpack the convoluted mystery bit by bit.

SpoilerI am worried for Jane... she's drinking waaaay t0o much in this book. Granted she's dealing with a lot of stuff at the moment, what with finding her birth mother and a really intense new job... but highly concerned right now.

I was rather ambivalent towards those marines - I was sorry that they were sick, but their attitude / behaviour was pretty shitty. The guy felt bad and tried to make up for it after all these years and they killed him for it. Seriously?! Talk about holding grudges and being extremely petty.

Though to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about Adrian not being posthumously awarded with a medal because yeah sure, he did lose his nerve and ran, but he did try to make up for it... but this was only because he was stopped and dragged back to the front line by his team. Who knows where he'd end up if that didn't happen... but he did save a whole bunch of people. Tsk. It's a tough one.

That brother and sister team though - geebus.

I've read all the books in this series and have loved them all. A body is found in a WW2 pillbox near a canal and the investigation takes Nick Dixon through events during the Falklands War, compensation claims and the Somerset cave system. Great storyline and love how the characters are developing. Has put me off caving though!

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

DI Nick Dixon was assigned to a case where a man had a heart attack but the heart attack occurred because he was attacked.  Jane has been promoted and is receiving training about crimes against children which is proving to be very difficult for her.  Nick and his team work to try to figure out who would want to kill the victim and found he was a soldier in the Falklands War.  He received a medal for his service.  But, as Nick investigates he finds some significant inconsistencies.  The mystery was twisty with many different things going on.  I very much enjoyed that mystery.  I also loved that we got to see more of Nick and Jane as a couple.  Nick is very proud of Jane's accomplishments.  He is very supportive of her in the things going on in her personal life.
