3.75⭐️ Newall was a better writer than I was expecting especially with dialogue. I enjoyed the slice of life of the sex workers in the SF sex underworld. I did not think the Dino disappearance/appearance plot line worked and took away from the much more interesting stories of the girls and Baby.

I don’t know what the f*** I just read or exactly how to rate it. Was it a stripper/dominatrix fever dream?

Although I found her professions interesting, I don’t know what to make of this novel. I found it kind of pointless except to show Ruth’s misery and mental unmooring in her boyfriend’s absence.

I loved it until the ending felt really rushed

A glimpse into the life of a girl struggling to find attachment to the people around her. I love the way this book views sex work. It views the girls as people un-needing of pity, as people with hurt navigating the world in the best way they know how.

I think that maybe I was just not the best audience for this book. While it was incredibly interesting to learn more about sex workers, I’m definitely not the target demo. I wished that there was more made into the mystery of Dino’s disappearance, but unfortunately it was more a slice of life of a sex worker in San Francisco. I began to feel as paranoid as Ruth, the main character, throughout the story while listening, which is an ode to good writing. It was enthralling at times, but I left wondering who this book was even targeted towards. The narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life, however. The writing kept me entertained, but it was one that left me wanting more and wondering the point of the book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced listening copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.
