A glimpse into the life of a girl struggling to find attachment to the people around her. I love the way this book views sex work. It views the girls as people un-needing of pity, as people with hurt navigating the world in the best way they know how.

I think that maybe I was just not the best audience for this book. While it was incredibly interesting to learn more about sex workers, I’m definitely not the target demo. I wished that there was more made into the mystery of Dino’s disappearance, but unfortunately it was more a slice of life of a sex worker in San Francisco. I began to feel as paranoid as Ruth, the main character, throughout the story while listening, which is an ode to good writing. It was enthralling at times, but I left wondering who this book was even targeted towards. The narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life, however. The writing kept me entertained, but it was one that left me wanting more and wondering the point of the book.

I enjoyed the style of the book, but it felt like it didn’t need to be as long as it was. I think it could actually even work better as a short story. However, despite the fact that it was verbose and nothing really happened, I’d read another book by this author in a heartbeat.

Messy/sad/lonely girl-lit. A story about longing to be seen and loved but feeling lonely and afraid to be yourself. At times it went too far adrift for me, but overall heartfelt and gripping.
