Hate to sound sexist but this book probably is actually more of a guys type of book then a womans but I have to admit I am enjoying it. There is a bit too much explanation on some stuff for my own preferance but some of the dialogue has cracked me up seriously bad. Haven't had this many belly laughs in awhile. The Narrator is pretty damn good although he has a couple of voices that drive me bats which is why it only gets a 4

I’m writing an overall review of the four book series. These are military science fiction and if you understand that - you’re going to be on board. Other reviewers mention the slow pace. It is slow but so is an eight month slog on foot across a hostile landscape. The pace makes sense. Is this series full of happy endings? No. It’s realistic. People die. People the reader is invested in - die. Are things tied up neatly in a beautiful bow by the end of book? No. But life seldom provides us with neat endings.
The bottom line is it’s a GOOD series. It’s worth a reader’s effort. Time well spent.

The progressive examples of sociological and political systems, and the discussions thereof, make this book.

Notes:
Great narration by Stefan Rudnicki! I was worried that Roger would be too whiny, etc. He's not! Great start to a series. A nice mix of coming of age, galactic politics, exploring & meeting new species and action.

A fun, not very rigorous military space opera. I listened to the audiobook version. It's a bit uneven - I like the world building, but many concept and phrases from our known Earth have persisted over the centuries and end up sounding like lazy writing shortcuts. All in all, the good stuff in this book outweighs the bad and I've moved on to the sequel.

The Empire of Man series was an enjoyable read. I especially enjoyed the evolution of the main character, the Prince. At this point there are four volumes available in the series, and I am curious if a fifth will appear, especially as the storyline has taken a turning point in setting. If you like a mix of tech and old-fashioned Burroughs-esque savagery, you might enjoy this.= series.
