I really wanted to like this book, not just because of the pretty cover but because the story had potential, diversity, romance, potential for good laughs.. And yet nope. I couldn’t find one thing to like about this book.
The story starts out with our heroine, Jasmine, who at first appears to be this fierce, career-centered woman. She makes it clear that love is something she’s actively searched for her entire life. She repeats that she just wanted to be loved. And yet all she gets is dumped. Because of this she decides to put her career first and make only “badass” decisions. So tell me why the second she meets her co-star she becomes this whiny and obsessed teenage girl?
The hero gave her nothing, they had 0 chemistry. Their story lacked so much I found myself wishing I was reading about the show they were filming instead of their real lives, because they were simply boring. He keeps a huge secret from her, clearly shows a lack of trust and yet claims he loves her. The most chemistry they had was when they were filming, outside filming they just seemed to be driven by lust.
What really threw me off though was how selfish Jasmine ended up being. She called him into her room to break up with him when really... what they had been doing could hardly be considered dating. The man didn’t even want to look her way or TALK to her so there really was no need to have a “break up” since there was nothing there to begin with. Then to really show how petty and unprofessional she is she proceeds to tell him that even if their show (show that our hero relies on to make his big break) gets picked up for a second season, she’ll fight it cause she wants nothing to do with him. Why? Because he didn’t want to date her.
Talk about petty, unreasonable and unprofessional. The hero himself points out that she is actively trying to sabotage him. He doesn’t mention the rest of the cast but by killing their promising show she’s sabotaging them too.
I won’t go on too long about the hero because I didn’t like him either. He came across as shallow and hypocritical. He wanted to be a big movie star, which is fine, we all chase fame and fortune, but I wish he had a motive besides just wanting to be praised. But even this would’ve been fine if it wasn’t for the fact that he wanted the fame and yet none of the burdens that came with it, aka interviews, press releases and a lack of privacy that comes with the job.

3.75⭐️ this book made me really happy. Almost dnf in the beginning tho... then it got better. Little spicy which I did not mind :) love hearing about Latinx culture through their perspective!! I think I have also decided I like tropes where one or both of them are famous, it adds to the story

Soap opera star Jasmine Lin is fed up with the media coverage trailing her breakup. When she gets an opportunity to be in a big-budget production that will put her on the global map, she decides to remain single and focus solely on her career.
But her plans are soon threatened by her growing affection for her co-star. And this time, if their relationship goes public, they both stand to jeopardise something that matters to them.
I knew I'd enjoy this one particularly because of the element of Latin American culture. But I also liked reading about Ashton's bond with his family. His concern for his son makes his character all the more endearing.
I can't deny that the root of the plot is steeped in cliches, right from Jasmine and Ashton's first encounter to the conflicts they face; up until the very end, the storyline pertaining to their romance is very predictable.
There's also the foreshadowing of their story through the scenes from the television series they are working on. So chapters alternate between their life and the episodes of the series. This aspect of the book didn't add all that much to the narrative, except for giving Jasmine and Ashton a way to work through their feelings while playing the characters of their TV show.
But what's of primary importance in the book is its stance towards celebrity gossip. It displays just how toxic and exhausting gossip columns and magazines can be. I was truly furious to read these media hounds having no respect for an artist's privacy and integrity.
One other thing that I enjoyed reading about is Jasmine's close knit bond with her cousins, Michelle and Ava. I love that they're called her Primas of Power! And they are depicted to be her pillars of support throughout.
It was a fun reading experience, humorous at times and heart-warming at others.

2.5 stars… I just really couldn’t get into this one. I was never excited to keep reading. I didn’t really like the main character especially in the third act breakup, like can we talk about selfish??? I loved Alexis Daria’s book Take the Lead, so I had high hopes for this book and it just wasn’t it for me

I really wanted to like this one because of the Latine representation but aside from that... The plot and love story were kind of bland
