The conflict around fame didn’t make much sense, since both of them chose acting as a career and both were actively pursuing more serious roles which would lead to more fame. BUT this was still super cute and I love the telenovela vibes.

I enjoyed reading this. I’ll probably read more of Alexis Daria’s work! Something was a little off with the pacing for me, like too rushed with all of the storylines? There’s Spanish in the book but the writing caters to non Spanish speakers by explaining almost all of it.

cute and fun romance cantering on actors working together but it had nothing all round special to make it memorable
these are the type of books i like listening to on audio while doing other jobs because they have to be kinda simple and lighthearted enough to not be distracting or need all my attention so i enjoyed it for what i needed out of it - but if i picked it up as a physical read i think i would have been a little bored/disappointed
still though i enjoyed the story and i liked the mc. i found the love interest a bit boring and old fashioned which wasn’t really my type, and i found the third act conflict a bit stupid but still liked it enough to read the sequel!

This was such a sweet story of two people trying to figure themselves out while figuring out what being together means within that. I would have liked a little more conflict - the way the conflict was handled was a little out of joint imo - but overall I liked it. Even though the characters are in places in their lives that are not relatable to most of us it was still easy to feel connected to them, which I really appreciated.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I started reading romance because I falsely believed they were all overdramatic or mindless. It didn’t help that book covers for romance novels never seemed to feature people who looked like me or (either side of) my family.
‘You Had Me at Hello’ makes a case for modern romance novels as well as for soap operas and telenovelas. The main characters are actors whose careers are on the rise after working on either. We see how these three mediums provide fans with entertainment and joy.
Besides simply being fun to read, ‘You Had Me at Hola’ has all of the elements I appreciate from my favorites within the genre: Racial diversity among the characters, development of intimacy, consideration of consent, conflict resolution, and personal growth.
This novel also explores colorism within the Latinx community, (Filipino and Puerto Rican) cultural identity and the importance of cultural representation and familial support, and recognizing toxic relationship patterns.
