A handful of gems in there, but lots of stories that I just got nothing from. I wonder how much of this is in the translation?

Excellent book. 4.5 stars. I seem to be drawn to short form Japanese literature. These stories are like prose haiku. Just a couple pages each, every one paints a wonderful scene, mostly mundane pieces of people's lives brought to life by the author's skill.

Some really nice imagery written in simple ways, and great tiny windows into peoples' lives in Japan between the 1920's~70's, but in the end I just liked it - that's all.
