Este libro lo leí para una lectura conjunta y LO AMÉEE <3
La historia está ambientada en una especie de Japón feudal steampunk :o El Imperio Shima es una nación que actualmente está muy contaminada por culpa del vapor de las máquinas que funcionan con "chi" que se obtiene de una flor llamada el loto rojo. Yukiko es una chica de 16 años y pertenece al clan Kitsune. Ella y su padre pertenecen a la corte imperial de Shima y él es un cazador muy conocido en el imperio. Un día, el Shoogun (el emperador) envía los envía a capturar un arashitora, una criatura mitológica mitad águila y mitad tigre, conocidos también como tigres del trueno. El problema es que los tigres del trueno se extinguieron hace más de 100 años y fallarle al Shoogun significa la muerte, por lo que el padre de Yukiko y ella incluida se ven obligados a ir en busca de un arashitora ...
La verdad es que le tenía muchas ganas y expectativas a este libro y las cumplió toditas <3. La narración puede ser un poquito pesada, porque el autor describe mucho TODO y tiende a ser un poco repetitivo. Esto en lo personal no me molestó, pero entiendo por qué a otras personas sí y es precisamente por esto que creo que este libro no es para todxs. Además, utiliza muchísimos conceptos en japonés, relacionados con ropa, armas, mitología, etc. Existe un glosario al final del libro, pero no aparecen todos los términos que se usan y en algunos casos se da por asumido que el lector entiende a lo que se refiere (y podría no ser así necesariamente). En mi caso, estaba contenta porque gracias a mis clases de japonés (y al anime jajaja) conocía alguno de los términos usados, pero igual tuve que recurrir al glosario un par de veces e imagino que podría ser molesto tener que hacerlo a cada rato.
La historia empieza un poquito lento, los primeros capítulos se enfocan principalmente en dar a conocer el Imperio Shima (y en particular su capital Kigen) y a los personajes, pero pasados los primeros 5 capítulos todo se pone mucho más interesante y empieza la acción. Este libro tiene muchas escenas de peleas y eso lo disfruté mucho! los personajes también me gustaron mucho, hasta los personajes malos me gustaron, porque sentí que de verdad eran maaaalos jajaja. Las mujeres en esta historia son BRU TA LES, me encantarooon <3. Mis personajes favoritos fueron Yukiko <3, Kin y Buruu. La relación entre la protagonista con uno de los personajes en particular está muy bien hecha y es muy bonitaaaa <3 De verdad fue una historia que disfruté muchísimo y qué decir el final, uff, qué final. Estoy ansiosa por empezar el segundo jiji

The Bad:
It was really hard for me to get into this book because of all of the long descriptions. I enjoyed the atmosphere he created, but there was just too much. I was bored! And there was way too much Japanese. I watch a lot of anime, so most of the words were familiar to me but did we really need to know what kind of silk robe the Shogun's assistant was wearing?
I also didn't care about any of the characters. Yukiko acted like a brat to her dad and Kasume. (The lady hunter) It's understandable, he's a drunk who had an affair, but she's still disrespectful. (And I know that makes me sound old.)
We don't exactly meet Yukiko's father and Akihito (her dad's friend and fellow hunter) at their best. They're in a drunken bar fight and Yukiko has to bail them out. Yukiko doesn't know what they'll do for food this month since all the money they have left is her's (her father gambled all his away) so what does she do? Gives all of her money away to a beggar girl…
I don't understand why Yukiko keeps thinking about "the boy with green eyes" aka a soldier she met once and barely spoke to and who was going to kill a dog (on orders from the shogun) is beyond me. She met a boy named Kin on the ship and he was nice and they rather hit it off, but of course she never thought of him that way.
Warning: Really sad flashback to when her dog died. (And another of when she lost her twin brother.)
The Good:
I almost gave up, but I kept reading because of the promise of a magical Arashitota (thunder tiger, kinda like a gryphon) and because the world building was interesting. I'm not a huge fan of steampunk, but this world was definitely unique. Yes, it has your typical airships and mechanical men, but everything is powered by these Lotus flowers which are destroying the world.
I'm glad I kept reading because once we meet Buruu, (the tiger) it got so much better! He's by far my favorite! His witty voice is definitely the highlight of this book. The part in the forest was the best! I loved Yukiko and Buruu's growing friendship.
Things got more exciting
The ending was darker, and I really hated the shogun, but I was mostly satisfied with how it ended.
Though I really liked this book, I hated the second one, and definitely recommend you stop here. I wish I had.

after she meets the rebels, but I didn't like the parts back in the palace as much since she was mostly away from Buruu, and dating that horrible Hiro. Buruu did have something hilarious to say about that! He's so funny!The ending was darker, and I really hated the shogun, but I was mostly satisfied with how it ended.

I hated that her dad died, (And Kasume) even if it happened in a heroic way, but at least the Shogun died too. I'm so glad that Kin didn't betray her! I like that guy. Maybe she'll eventually like him too. (But she'll most likely fall for a cute rebel…)Though I really liked this book, I hated the second one, and definitely recommend you stop here. I wish I had.
Jay Kristoffs Schreibstil durfte ich bereits in "Nevernight" kennenlernen, umso gespannter war ich natürlich, wie sein damaliges Debüt geschrieben wurde. Der Klappentext hat mich sehr angesprochen und ich habe mich sehr auf das japanische Setting mit Steampunk Elementen gefreut.
Die ersten 100 Seiten hatte ich Schwierigkeiten, in die Welt reinzukommen. Man wird einfach so direkt mitgerissen, ohne dass was erklärt wird, und das machte mir den Anfang nicht ganz so leicht. Je weiter ich jedoch in dem Buch fortschritt und je näher wir der eigentlichen Geschichte kamen, desto leichter fiel es mir, alles zu verstehen. Für die zahlreichen japanischen Begriffe gibt es im Anhang zum Glück ein Glossar.
Auf den ersten Seiten werden einem auch unfassbar viele Charaktere vorgestellt, sodass es bei den japanischen Namen manchmal schwerfällt, sich alles zu merken und zu verstehen, wer wer ist. Aber auch das legte sich.
Nachdem ich ersteinmal in der Story war, konnte ich das Buch auch nicht mehr weglegen. Spätestens als ein bestimmter Charakter auftaucht wird das Lesen dieses Buches zu einer Sucht. Kristoffs Humor war wie immer sehr unterhaltsam und ich liebe es, wie er so souveräne und sehr reife Frauencharaktere erschafft. Manchmal erschien mir Yukiko mit ihren 16 Jahren zwar etwas sehr furchtlos, aber trotzdem fühlte sich alles sehr authentisch an.
Am besten hat mir die Dynamik zwischen Yukiko und Buruu gefallen. Wie die beiden miteinander interagieren, ist das beste am gesamten Buch und auch wie sich ihre Beziehung zueinander entwickelt, ist toll zu beobachten.
Natürlich gibt es den ein oder anderen Plottwist, den ich manchmal nicht so hab kommen sehen. Umso spannender wurde natürlich alles, was passiert ist, und da dies der erste Band der Trilogie ist, gab es auch mehr als nur einen Höhepunkt. Mir hat die gesamte Story unglaublich gut gefallen, was vor allem an dem flüssigen Schreibstil und den Ereignissen lag. Auch mit der Masse an Charakteren kam ich irgendwann zurecht und am liebsten würde ich direkt den zweiten Band lesen – schade, dass ich da noch fünf Monate warten muss.
