I think this was an interesting look into the Duggar history and shines a light on the level of exploitation that those kids were exposed to from their parents, their religion, and their TV show. At the same time there is a level of not quick breaking through enough on Jill’s side when it comes to the culpability of her parents and the role they played in her trauma. Because of that part of this book felt like she was spending time trying to excuse their behavior which didn’t sit well with me.

It’s hard to “rate” a memoir or someone’s written, lived experience. That being said, this was an important story to be told (especially in the strict Christian culture where abuse runs rampant) and I believe Jill told it fairly. Her “roses and thorns” analogy resonates with me- her family has had good memories and terrible and neither cancels out the other.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. But it made me feel pretty sad.
