I went into this book thinking it might be a more personal deep dive into the hidden abuses revealed in the shiny happy people documentary. It was more about Jill talking about how uncomfortable it was to be on camera all the time, the double standard of how her brother was treated by her father versus how she was treated, and later financial abuse.
I’m glad Jill found her way out of the fundamentalist stranglehold, but I think she’s still in deconstruction, as so many of us are. It takes years of work and support from other people to fully get out of it.

Ok….I don’t know what it is about the Duggars….but they keep my interest rolling. I devoured both Jinger and Jill’s books in basically less than a day. Part of my fascination and emotions about these books is because I watched a lot of close friends go through very similar experiences to that of the Duggars and I grew up in some forms of legalism myself. This book was quite different from Jinger’s in that it was a true memoir of Jill and Derrick’s journey and exposed basically all the true and important issues we want to know about this famous family. Jill was extremely honest it seems, but I would also argue extremely gracious given all the things she’s been through to her parents. I truly appreciate her acknowledgment of both the good and the bad things her parents did for them growing up and she straight up called Josh out. It’s not a pile on “tell all” book in the sense that it demeans, but instead it seems to be just a sincere telling of how things played out. I’m grateful she has the legal liberty to speak out and has chosen to do so. According to her book most if not all of the other siblings are under non disclosure agreements which explains why they can’t speak out against the show or their family’s handling of things. I also loved that she affirms she’s not deconstructed or lost faith, but that she has chosen to stand up for herself and speak the truth. The reason I deducted 1 star is because I entirely disagree with her stance on public school not being harmful and her slight negative comments toward homeschooling as IBLP “requirements”. There is certainly a real and biblically based sense in which we are responsible for our kids education and how and what they learn. Public schools are in fact dangerous for the majority of children. Just because Derrick turned out ok as a public schooler doesn’t mean it’s the same world for children her age. We can acknowledge that people turn out how they’re supposed despite bad education systems but it is not ideal. My only other minor complaint was a few more progressive/trendy catchphrases I didn’t like like “speaking truth to power” but it was not heavily used throughout so I was largely able to brush past it especially to see a fellow sister in Christ who is now free from legalistic bondage. I’m glad she wrote this book. I’m happy for her and I feel like her honesty will really influence others for good.
I love that this book is filled with hope, despite the frustrating and heartbreaking nature of so much abuse.
Truly so much respect for Jill in how she expressed such complex and often nuanced situations, without using belligerent disrespect. I'm also so glad that she found a husband who could handle both supporting and defending her.
Finally, I'm glad that despite having grown up in a legalistic cult that inaccurately portrayed Christianity, Jill found a healthy church and continues to be faithful to the Lord. I pray that God honors her and continues to redeem her story.
Definitely recommend!
