Che delusione.
Quando ho letto la trama diciamo che mi aspettavo che la storia di un'assassina fosse meno bei vestiti, civetterie e triangoli amorosi e più azione. Invece questo è un Harmony mascherato da altro, con una bella copertina come specchietto per le allodole.
Parliamo di Celaena, una delle peggiori protagoniste che io abbia mai avuto la sfortuna di incontrare.
Dice che è la migliore assassina di tutte, dice sempre quanto è forte e brava e ganza ma sono solo parole. Non è mai niente di quello che dice, ed è una contraddizione vivente. Odia le dame di corte perché pensano solo agli uomini e poi "omg Dorian è così beeello! lo vorrei giusto slinguazzare tutto" e lei poi è diversa dalle altre donne infatti odia le cose frivole! e poi muore dietro ai bei vestiti, passa ore a guardarsi allo specchio (all'inizio del libro hanno dovuto letteralmente trascinarla fuori perché non la smetteva di rimirarsi e autodirsi "oh quanto sono bella!". Insomma è la classica oca giuliva Mary-Sue.
E' la migliore assassina del regno a soli 18 anni, e questo da solo urla Mary-Sue all'ennesima potenza. Ma non è finita! E' bellissima, talmente bella che ha si dei punti negativi ma ammette lei stessa che in realtà con un velo di trucco diventano punti positivi! insomma è perfetta, e se questo ancora non urla Mary-Sue aspettate perché non ho finito. Come tutte le Mary-Sue che si rispettano è orfana! (lo so, lo so! non ve lo aspettavate! è una cosa che infatti non succede mai alle mary-sue #sarcasm) e il suo è un passato tragico (anche questo non succede mai alle mary-sue).
E' arrogante e scontrosa, uno potrebbe dire va beh il personaggio odia l'impero, bla bla ovviamente non si piegherà facilmente no? Invece no.
Si perché Celaena invece si piega subito pur di poter fuggire dalla prigionia, poi però fa l'arrogante con principi, re, guardie, ed indovinate un po'! la uccidono! no, aspettate non lo fanno. Come sarebbe non lo fanno? un principe si fa prendere a pesci in faccia da un'assassina messa in prigione che potrebbe uccidere da un momento all'altro? si, lo fa. Insomma Celaena può essere arrogante e strafottente con chiunque, tanto nessuno le farà mai niente per motivi ancora non precisati.
Questa serie sta dove sta, io non ho intenzione di continuarla. Dicono che i prequel non sono a livelli così bassi ma ora come ora non so proprio se crederci.

There is so much I want to say but at the same time there are no words. I read assassins blade last year sometime and it wrecked me. I wasn't able to pick up throne of glass after that because I didn't want to read about a world that he no longer was in. (Iykyk) but I knew someday I would want to continue and so when the opportunity to join a Maas readalong happened I decided it was time. And I am so happy I finally did it. I loved throne of glass. I loved Dorians flirtatious sarcastic behavior. I love chaols gruff but tenderness. And I loved seeing Celaena again. I missed her more than I realized. I cannot wait to continue on. I've avoided major TOG spoilers all this time, let's see if I can till the end.

The most frivolous character imaginable. I simply cannot come to terms with an assassin who emotes like a five year old and spends her time parading around in dresses and pouting because men aren't paying enough attention to her, instead of- oh, I don't know, focussing on the competition that will save her life?! And don't get me started on the competition itself- it was the basic premise of the book, and yet we saw pretty much none of it. Every now and then Celaena would mention that another 'test' had taken place, and she'd passed it, and then she'd take the opportunity to bitch and moan about Cain for a paragraph. I don't know about anyone else, but I for one was actually looking forward to the actual competition itself. Besides which, I'd expected something challenging and interesting, but the tasks were as generic as possible. And what is up with her being so good at everything? Contrary to whatever the hell is going on in this book, characters with flaws are actually welcome. There's really only one thing to say after 400 pages of this drivel: Celaena (?) Sardothien is a Mary Sue.
And we don't like Mary Sues. (Well, I don't anyway. Given the high rating this book has, I figure not everyone is as picky as I am currently being).
All this being said, I still gave this book 3 stars (well, 2.5), because it had potential. It was fairly entertaining once I decided to ignore every self-obsessed thought that the main character managed to throw in there, and I may have been speed reading towards the end because I wanted to get it over with, but at least I finished it. I wish there had been more detail about her life before Endovier, because her training and early missions sounded pretty interesting. In all fairness, I'd probably have loved this book when I was 15 and wouldn't go so far as to say it's a bad book, just that it's not a good book for me.
