Wonderful
Highly recommended. Start with A Secret History of Witches, and then come read Ursule’s story in this prequel. I enjoyed soaking in the stories of this magickal family immensely.

I hate writing bad reviews, but man, I just couldn't with this book. I read about 60% of the way through and finally had to abandon ship - something I rarely do. I couldn't connect with the characters, the story slogged along, the historical elements were glossed over, and all the witch stuff just felt very cliche. The writing style was fine, but fairly unremarkable. This is the first book I've read from this author, and will be the last.

We meet with a girl at the beginning of the book, and accompany her throughout her life. I cried so much, mourned, loved while reading this book, I can only recommend anyone who likes some magic to read it.

The prequel to “A Secret History of Witches.” Apparently I read that one before joining this platform, so I had it marked as “read” but no review or notes to compare. I do remember taking a break halfway through because I couldn’t stay engaged through the slow-moving story, interesting as it was.
I’m more familiar with this author’s slow, atmospheric style now. Not a page-turner, but a poignant story about family, relationships, strong female characters, with some magic sprinkled in. I cared about Ursule and her efforts to keep her family safe throughout the course of her long life… actually, I found myself all teared up toward the end.
My favorite LM book so far.

Hm...how to accurately describe this book. There were parts I enjoyed, but I felt like it left so much to wonder about and I feel like I expected a lot more from a story of a witch.
