I can easily understand why this terrifying book is a modern classic in Japanese literature. The premise — being entrapped at the bottom of a hole in the dunes with siding that is too steep to climb out, and having to constantly keep digging to prevent yourself from being buried by yet more sand — is a simple yet horrifying set up. It is the Sisyphus myth (never ending, pointless work) meeting the Tantalus myth (what you want is within sight and almost within reach, but you never get it). It’s an incredibly claustrophobic prison of sand.
The writing is alert with panic and adrenaline, the translation seamless. The novel feels a bit like Edgar Allen Poe narrating Franz Kafka’s nightmare diary. Been meaning to read this short masterpiece for years, and I’m so glad that I finally did! Its modern mythic qualities have me anticipating that I’ll soon start catching parallels and references to it everywhere in other works.

Загалом, це філософський роман про свободу та вибір людини. Сюжет доволі абсурдний - ентомолог Нікі Дзюмпей із Токіо вирушає на пошуки рідкісних комах. Ввечері, коли він збагнув, що останній автобус вже поїхав, він зупиняється на нічліг у якомусь селі, де люди живуть на дні піщаних ям. Зранку виявилось, що зникла драбина по якій він спустився туди. Кіоко, жінка в якої він зупинився, пояснює йому, що їхнє завдання щоденно вигрібати пісок щоб не загинути. Отак Нікі і вгрузає в щоденну рутину вигрібання піска.
Пісок тут не просто фізична перешкода, це радше метафора постійних і безсенсовних зусиль. Пісок нагадує, що життя не піддається повному контролю. Подібно до Сізіфа, він вигрібає без кінця й краю цей пісок. Незважаючи на це, Нікі таки намагається надати цьому всьому якийсь сенс і віднайти життєву цінність.
Також тут слід відмітити важливість самореалізації (саме те чому Нікі ходить і шукає цих мушок) і не важливість минулого (бути тут і зараз), важливість виходу з патової ситуації.

I have always read a lot of classic European and American literature. This was the first book I read by an Asian author for an assignment in my East Asian History class. It was fascinating just to read something so different from what I normally read. It helped me realize the importance in reading outside of the genre or area of literature that is your favorite, and instead to search for literature from different parts of the world and different perspectives.
This story was intriguing and psychologically tormenting. It was easy to immediately become invested in the lives of the two main characters. There was so much internal confliction as I read it. I do not want to give away the story. I read it without knowing anything about it besides that the author was Japanese. But I can say I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are looking to try something different.

In his dreary and thought-provoking novel, Kobo Abe poses questions of identity and belonging by raising the stakes to the extreme. What is survival worth? When is the battle with nature won and lost? Existential angst and alienation are palpable here. More accurately translated as "Sand Woman," as far as I can tell.

We must imagine Sisyphus to be happy. It's hard to read this novel without thinking of Camus and his work of philosophy. Abe has written a slow (but addictive), philosophical, surreal and tense book with The Woman in the Dunes. I found I could only stomach it in short, feverish bursts. It's definitely one of the more accomplished Japanese novels I've read, up there with Mishima's best. Despite my love of Japanese literature, it's taken me a long time to come around to Abe and I wish I'd managed it sooner. This is not light reading, but it's a powerhouse of thought and tension.
