3 stars is perhaps unfair because I really enjoyed the book and, considering that it is a debut novel, it is really well written. Although Cavanagh is from Northern Ireland, the book is a fast paced legal thriller set in New York. The plot is far-fetched but is told at such a breakneck speed that it doesn't really matter. It is the literary equivalent of a Hollywood popcorn action movie and is full of many of the same cliches but is certainly thrilling. Had it done more than tick the boxes it would have gained an extra star because the author can tell a story. I will be interested to see what he does next and hope that it contains a few surprises along with the thrills.
Eddie Flynn, a former con artist turned defense attorney, is pulled back into the courtroom against his will when Russian mob boss Olek Volchek kidnaps his daughter. With only 48 hours, Eddie must win an impossible murder trial, using every trick he knows to ensure his daughter’s safety—all while a bomb is strapped to his back and the FBI is watching.
I recently picked up The Defense after receiving an ARC of Witness 8 (book #8 in the Eddie Flynn series). Realizing it was a series, I decided to start from the beginning to better understand Eddie's character. This was a fast-paced legal thriller with plenty of courtroom tension and a fascinating protagonist—Eddie, a con man turned lawyer, who reminded me a bit of Mickey Haller from The Lincoln Lawyer, with a con-man twist. Though some scenes felt a bit far-fetched (Eddie scaling courthouse walls, for instance), the book was quick and exciting, showcasing Eddie’s clever maneuvers and con-man skills. The Russian mob focus didn’t particularly grab my interest, but I enjoyed Cavanagh’s writing style and look forward to exploring more in this series.

Eddie Flynn, the man that you are!!!!
I loved this book so much, really easy to follow, even though they're lawyers and stuff, the writer structured the book in a way that it explained me what they were saying without making me feel dumb.
Not going to lie, I nearly cried when Eddie "Embraces" (hugs) Jimmy.
I love how the author kept reminding us that Eddie has skills, but then at the end, when they say that Little Benny has the remote... I nearly threw the book across the room!!!! It's soo goooooooodd!!!!!!
