It was refreshing to read about a world where people can shapeshift into creatures and invoke magic from the gods. However, you do not need to read the first book to enjoy this prequel of sorts although something strongly tells me a character in the Of Fire And Stars series might be a descendent of the antagonist in this book (but this is just a hunch)

Pacing is okay. I loved the magic in here, especially the Manifest and blood magic. Just wished we had more magic from Asra who is supposed to be the strongest demigod around but all she does is just act as an amplifier for other people's magic. That kind of let me down. Other than that, no problematic depictions of people of colour or bisexual people so I guess that's good enough for me.

Oh my gosh, this book was so good. It was new and exciting, and it kept me hooked the whole way through. There were times when Asra did stupid things, but every time, I understood because her emotions backed her up. The plot was heartbreaking and beautiful, and unlike many books, had a lot of twists I didn't expect. I think what made it work so well was the complexity of every single character. And of course, I loved the representation of this book. Overall, a great book to ring in 2019 with.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It has more world building than in Of Fire and Stars, but there wasnt any info dumps which was a relief. Although I did guess some of the twists, there were plenty more to keep me guessing and interested.

I liked the setting and the characters and the idea of the plot but there was just something off about it. Like it should have been faster paced since so much was at stake but it was more like a long, meandering journey.

Literally the BEST book I've ever read, I couldn't put it down!! The worldbuilding was SO good and interesting and I loved the characters and SO MUCH adventure and magic and travelling and I found myself wanting to reread the book even before I finished it, which is like the first time that happened :D The pacing was great, the entire plot so cool and I loved Hal and Asra so much! I've literally no idea what else to say other than that I loved the book a lot :D

I can't wait to reread the book someday :D

A great prequel to Of Fire and Stars that takes place in the same universe, but where the main character has a different kind of magic than Dena.
