Brilliant book, very witty and kind, also very well written. Liked every single character, especially Edward the corgi.
This was a nostalgia comfort re-read for me … first read around 2010, saw the movie in theaters 1988 and really loved it.
I expected this to feel more dated, but it is really a story about human nature, so maps and phones (and the ‘time lady’) were the main things that dated it. Otherwise it is still really striking.
Macon and his wife Sarah are dealing with the loss of their child and unraveling of their marriage. As they deal with this, Macon learns more about who he is, what he wants, and how he has lived his life.
2020s me can see the impact of a lifetime of unhealed trauma on Macon and all of his siblings - what happens to Rose later in the book really impacted me emotionally because it all makes so much sense. Ultimately it is the story of someone finding the courage to finally do the work.

Anne Tyler write beautifully melancholy prose, and I will definitely read more of her novels. This book is sad but lovely, if perhaps a bit slow to start. I ended up liking characters that at first I couldn't stomach, so I was impressed with her sense and pace of development.

I read this book because it was handed down to me. I hated the protagonist from the onset but I could not bring myself to abandon it once I had started it. I guess the time and era of its writing is during a dark time for women because this Macon creep gets to have his cake and eat it too. The animals were this book's saving grace. I enjoyed their antics and often looked forward to when they would get mentioned. But even they were not cute enough to make me like this book. The writing style is alright but the story just irks me.
