This book started off strong but petered out as it went on. It seems needlessly convoluted. How many different factions can there be? And how many different people can tell Amy that she shouldn't trust anyone, including them? An endless number, it seems. I knew this was the first in a series going in, but it drives me crazy when the first book is treated like a prequel with a massive cliffhanger. It makes me not want to read further, just on principle. Each book should tell its own story and feel like a satisfying read. Finally, and this is a personal peccadillo, I wish young adult authors would resist the urge to constantly pair up the main female character with the first hot guy she sees. Seriously. A love interest had absolutely no place in this book at all. It wasn't needed. Please, authors, resist the urge!

Interesting premise that moves right along once it finally gets going, but it loses a full star because the title is a big fat lie. I was incredibly disappointed when I realized Dorothy wasn't going to die. The whole book felt like wasted effort.

I don't really have the attention span (since it's almost six in the morning) to write a real review of this book. So, here's the short version.

Amy irritated me. I hate that some authors think anger equals strength, especially in female protagonists. Why in the world would a bitter, cruel person be stronger than someone who has compassion and love? God, Amy's moments of sympathy for others really did not make up for the attitude she had.

I also felt really confused a lot of the time. I mean, I understood the gist of the story, but really, OZ was so different in this story that I felt like the themes - Dorothy, the yellow brick road, etc. - were really just a shell for a completely different story. I'm not sure the story really had to be about Dorothy at all. She could have just as easily made up an entirely different world. Oz was so completely different than the original that it barely resembled Oz at all. I know that was part of the point, but it wasn't really worth all the work it must have taken to make the stories line up. I have a feeling that what I'm trying to say could have been said in fewer words, but it's early/late.

I really didn't feel a connection to any character in the story except Pete - and the revelation at the end really disappointed me. I was kind of hoping Pete was...more than...well, anyway. I don't want to give anything away. I'm hoping that Amy grows up a little by the next book - which I will read, despite my mild disappointment with this book.

Anyway, my main warning to anyone planning to read this book is to be prepared for some gorey descriptions. I'm usually pretty good at dealing with gross stuff (I have watched a lot of Dexter, for example), but some of the descriptions in this book were especially horrible, so be prepared. And also, be prepared to absolutely hate Dorothy by the end of this book. You'll never want to watch the Wizard of Oz again, just FYI.

El principio resulta algo tedioso, pero realmente merece la pena por lo que viene después. Amy es un personaje tan realista que te hace sentir como si estuvieras en Oz, un mundo perfectamente construido también. Deseando leer la siguiente parte.
