dark emotional slow-paced

I need a moment.

The stories and characters just never pulled me in. The wiring is long with a lot of unnecessary text, with themes that didn’t really speak to me. The plot and structure could have been interesting, but I didn’t find enough connection between the separate stories. I stopped at the end of the second book - maybe I’ll go back and finish the third book and it will come together more…

Top five author does it again.

4.9 I wasn't expecting or hoping for another A Little Life, so I wasn't disappointed when this was different. Agree that the three stories seem like three separate books she just couldn't finish so she cobbled them together. It was very faintly reminiscent of a David Mitchell structure but unfortunately without the payoff he always delivers. The 2nd book was the weakest for me but still poignant. Hanya can be problematic but I find her books compulsively readable.

Uiteindelijk krijgt deze dikke pil toch nog wat emotionele ontwikkeling in de derde helft.

Toch wel teleurgesteld na A Little Life.

Ik vind het vreselijk, maar ik stop met dit boek. Heb me door deel 1&2 geworsteld, het kan me niets meer schelen hoe het in deel 3 afloopt….

This was a monster of a read--all 700 pages were dense with story and meanings. I liked all three of the stories, but in my opinion they crossed too many genres to be put together into one book. In this book, same as A Little Life, Hanya Yanagihara writes people so beautifully. She truly knows how to bring humanity and nuance into every character. However, I agree with a lot of other reviews that all of the stories weren't cohesive enough to be together in one book, and if they were there was something that I wasn't understanding that I felt like I should.

Dark, ambiguous, beautiful. A warning and a reminder. I adored this.
