Another well-researched and interesting insight, this time into China during the time of the Great Leap Forward.

I was hesitant to read this book because I don't know anything about the Chinese culture. It had great reviews so I thought I'd try it. I was sucked in from the first page to the last. It was absolutely fascinating.

Dreams of Joy is the sequel to Shanghai Girls. It is mostly set in 1950's China and follows a mother and daughter through-out a harrowing journey and time in China's history. You don't have to have read Shanghai Girls to enjoy this book. They are both amazing books though.

I absolutely love her writing and storytelling. Her stories just pull at the heart strings while also set in history many Westerners are less familiar with

Intense. I liked the characters and cared about what happened.

Sequel to Shanghai Girls, although to be honest I didn't remember a lot of the details from that one and I was fine.

Joy is a Chinese-American who has just finished her first year of college in 1958. Angry after her father's suicide, she runs away to become a member of Red China. Her mother follows her to try and convince her to come back. I found the descriptions of what went on in the communes horrifying and disturbing, yet the entire book was compelling.

Good sequel - crazy look at a time in history.

I can't get enough of Lisa See. She is an amazing writer.

Good ending to Shanghai Girls.
