If you're a white person trying your best to learn about the daily struggle of black Americans to avoid being shot for no good reason… read this book.
Written by a comedian, this sarcastic, witty, hilarious, but simultaneously painfully serious book about the systemic oppression of Black Americans definitely opened my eyes. I read this book in one night, and then bought the Kindle version. While it seems geared more toward black Americans, I feel like this book is more useful for white Americans since most of us aren't forced to think about how different our lives would be if we were black. Well, this book forces you to think about it.

Not really satirical. This book is understandably depressing. I'm not sure that white people will even get it, because usually their experiences with cops are on a different wavelength.
While entertaining (especially as I listened to the author read it), it's also a serious sobering look at racism in our country. Especially relevant as so many of us are wearing masks and men of color have to think seriously about their safety doing that in ways I would never consider.
So glad I listened to the audiobook, narrated by D.L. Hughley- hearing him made it so much better than if I had just been reading it.
This book is funny- funny in the sense that if we don't laugh, we'll cry. The ridiculous recommendations from white people as to how Black people should be acting to avoid being shot, run-ins with police, etc. Really just highlight how (despite how well meaning) out of touch the white community is. Many of the suggestions are, sadly, the garbage I grew up hearing from my family, are the same things I repeated even into adulthood. The problem is, until you actually really and truly begin to learn about the Black experience, the suggestions are all laughable. And almost, to a degree, a little demeaning- like POC have never even considered how to be less of a target.
Hughley also makes some excellent counter arguments to suggestions given to Black people and commentary on how the criticism against racism is so flawed.

Very tongue in cheek, sarcastic writing which is right up my alley. I suggest listening to the audiobook because the author does a great job of narrating.

First off- I won this through a goodreads giveaway.
Now....There are so many people I want to pass this book on to. I’ve been arguing with people about Kaepernick the past few days bc he donated money to black organizations for COVID 19 relief. I was told that’s racist. When I tried to explain why it wasn’t. Well, it still was to them. This book is so funny but so sad that this is where we are in America at this point. Still.

A satirical book proving how ridiculous a lot of the things bigots say regarding black people are by masquerading as a how to guide but highlighting cases where said advice would not have changed the outcome. I really enjoyed it, as it highlighted just how ingrained racism is structurally and how desperate people are to absolve police of all wrong doings. I also learnt that the ice cream jingle used to be a minstrel jingle..
