Thoroughly unsatisfying. Caroline Kepnes is a great writer and she is talented, however, this just didn't do it for me. This story is told from multiple perspectives, though only one of them held any interest for me, and I resented having to read from the other POVs.

I read You a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but I didn’t expect to completely fall in love with this book! The premise is wild and I would honestly love to understand the science behind it, but I kinda love that Kepnes took what is ostensibly a sci-fi monster plot and made it about the relationships instead of crazy twisty plot stuff.
I loved You and Hidden Bodies, but boy this one I struggled through extremely hard. The writing was great but the story line to me was just lacking it wasn't suspenseful, it didn't have me on the edge of my seat and it really wasn't all that dark. Overall it was ok but I could have done without it.

After reading You and Hidden Bodies, this book was a bit of a disappointment. With You, I loved the writing style, the characters, and the outrageous plot. I was not bored for a minute. With this book, I feel like none of what made You so good was there. It started off promising but the middle dragged. And dragged. I found it hard to care about the characters or what was happening, which wasn't much. Or at least it felt that way because there was nothing there to keep my attention. I didn't mind the switching view points but honestly I think I would have liked this better if it was told completely from John's point of view. He was interesting and I wanted more time with him, and I wanted to know more about what went down in that basement. Overall, I think Kepnes was just trying to do too much with this book and it didn't quite hit. Still, the beginning and the end were really good and made up for the middle drag a little bit.

There were a lot of ways this story could've gone sideways. By creating a character who deals with something so outlandish and unbelievable the story could have quickly turned into a sci-fi horror plot, but it didn't. For that I am glad. Instead, we were given a complicated, puppy dog character who struggled with something none of us could imagine (and hopefully never will) going through. From the beginning, the story morphed itself from a mystery to a memoir of Eggs and Chloe into a romance. It was overwhelming, it was beautiful, and I really hope there is a sequel here!
Kepnes has a way of pulling you in with these characters, hating and loving them and loving to hate them at the same time. Even the secondary characters have a certain amount of depth for such a short read
Omg omg omg. This book was weird. And different than the author’s first, but I liked it. So much to digest, but basically give me a star crossed lovers story and I am hooked.
2.5 Stars rounded up to three. Maybe it’s because I’ve never read H.P. Lovecraft or it just wasn’t my cup of tea. This book is VERY different from Kepnes’ other books. The writing is done well but the story was a little.. off. This is not a book I would recommend.
