I really really loved the MMC but the FMC just wasn’t my favorite. She had trauma that was valid and her decisions made sense, but I didn’t love her personality. She was a bit brash for my tastes.
This was a unique take on the “inheriting a child suddenly” trope that worked well in this world. The child was adorably contrary and the nods towards parenting were pretty accurate.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: child SA, child neglect, torture, death, survival scenarios, captivity, kidnapping, horror elements

honestly, i couldn’t remember reading this book at all. but while rereading it, i realized that it’s actually so good!! at least i had a great time reading it.
it had a potential to be a five-star read, but there was an aspect that i was 50/50 about.
i also realized that i really like reading romance with a trope that is “a funny girl meets an almost animal like man and they can’t communicate, but she’s always yapping nevertheless, and he helps her to survive in a harsh environment” in a fantasy/paranormal setting.
what i didn’t like is the part where carrow has to prove malkom that she wouldn’t betray him. i mean yeah, she lead him to a trap, but she had a good reason and he realized it later. but constantly telling her she had to prove she didn’t lie and at the end being like “ok, well now i trust you” gave me the ick.
i meeean, malkom has his traumas and reasons not to trust her again, BUT SHE ALSO HAS HER TRAUMA and a really good reason for her actions. so idk, i just didn’t appreciate how this issue was (or wasn’t) resolved.

Sigh...I just adore these books. Each one is just incredible. Full of passion, excitement, heart wrenching at times, lots of action, and a great story line. Kresley is an amazing writer

This was excellent!!!!!!! Such fascinating and character development. Also, I feel like the couple here truly did the work to overcome the hurts they did to one another (unlike some other IAD couples *cough cough* Rydstrom and Sabine) and despite some really tragic backstory full of trauma these two really worked through their issues. It was really lovely. Also, the addition of Ruby was beautiful and I think really shows great growth of Cole as a writer.

I will never recover from this book. This book was everything I needed today. I loved everything about it. Carrow is such a fierce woman I instantly fell in love with her; Malkom is a caveman and everyone knows how much I love them, all he needed was love; Ruby was so sweet I wanted to cuddle her.

That was really good. The narrator was great. I am going to have to listen to the rest of the series!
