Alone, I often fall down into nothingness. I must push my foot stealthily lest I should fall off the edge of the world into nothingness. I have to bang my head against some hard door to call myself back to the body.
For this moment, this one moment, we are together. I press you to me. Come, pain, feed on me. Bury your fangs in my flesh. Tear me asunder. I sob, I sob.

Absolutely stunning prose, very original, but perhaps a bit too challenging to understand for me right now.

One of my top three favorite books of all time, and my favorite book from Virginia Woolf. Reading the book for the first time can feel jarring, especially if you're already familiar with Woolf's work - it's an experimental cadence for her, with the speaker not always immediately clear and fractured structures that can make it difficult to read if you aren't fully immersed. The second time you read it, it feels like breathing. The pace is beautiful and almost a meditative state. It's a quiet practice in observance and almost painful honesty.

"The flower," said Bernard, "the red carnation that stood in the vase on the table of the restaurant when we dined together with Percival is become a six-sided flower; made of six lives."
The Waves is a very simple book - it is a collection of melodramatic monologues of a group of friends, from childhood to adulthood, that describe their experiences and the death of their friend.
It scarcely has a plot, and we barely get dialogue - the beauty of it lies within the thought-provoking sololiquys and the amazing descriptions of nature.
Sometimes when I was reading this I literally thought, "how the fuck did woolf ever think of this. this girl is crazy" - so yes it is that good.
A bit difficult to read and it did put me in a bit of a slump so personal rating is like 4⭐️. But objectively this is a masterpiece. 5⭐️
overall? 4.5⭐️
