I am fully OBSESSED with 天官赐福! A week ago I read all the manhua chapters and anime episodes that are currently out but I needed to know more so I started reading the 小說!Honestly, I have to look up the dictionary every few sentences because the phrases, terms, word choices are meant to fit the olden, historical time period, so it's not colloquial, but I’m obsessed so it's okay, plus it's a way to practice my Chinese XDD This has everything I want, romance, action, fantasy, drama, mystery etc. It is so beautifully written. The main character is intriguing, the side characters are just as strong. We follow Xie Lian, a crown prince who had ascended to the heavenly realm as an immortal warrior 800 years ago but was banished twice through the years and is now the laughing stock of the other immortal beings. At the beginning of the story, he ascends a third time and has to go on a quest essentially. He interacts with other characters throughout the book and slowly things are revealed about him and also the past 800 years. He also strikes up a seemingly out of nowhere friendship to one of the strongest demon kings, Hua Cheng, (although when they met, neither disclosed their true identity) and it is clear they have some connection from the past that he isn't aware of yet. The characters are so complex, the world-building is phenomenal, the dialogues are insightful and witty. It's just EPIC. Reading it in Chinese makes the experience that much more beautiful.

wow hua cheng really knows how to make an entrance (+ the gambling scene?????)

(a personal gripe about the translation: idk if the original Chinese text has certain phrases written in a way that required additional emphasis but some sentences being in all-caps and having additional punctuation !!!! ??? felt really cheesy to me especially during tense moments)

Well, it's finally done!
MXTX has a really great eye for plots and characters however, I think is a little bit lost in translation. Understanding that there's no official published English tranlation I am lenient (and this tl is a lot better than MDZS) and theres not really a lot to complain about. The writing is fine, but theres just a lack of emotion in the translation which makes it a bit tedious to get through. I don't know if it's actually the translator's fault or MXTX's error on that part. Though that's not to say there werent parts which were exceedingly heartwrenching which were portrayed through the writing, but they didn't really reflect any /style/ so to say.

However, the single weakness of this book didn't deter me from enjoying this any less! Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are amazing characters, their romance blossomed extremely well, as well with lots of funny and heartwarming parts in between! I'm also one of those people who love a good plot as well as a romance, and this one was pretty good! I was a little confused in some parts (though I blame that on myself trying to read this quickly so I could finally tick off my first book for the new year), and the plot seemed a little lacking to me in comparison with her other works, and was a little bit more character driven, which worked well to tell the story!

Oh yeah!!! A relationship between a god and a ghost was something I had never read about or even considered before!!! That was such a good combination and so unique too, but it works so well! Hualian forever!!!

I did really enjoy this a lot!

my first mxtx book! I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.

The writing felt a bit odd I think but then again I read an unofficial translation and it wasn't too bad.

I love the characters and the plot, can't wait to read the next books.
