I finished this weeks ago, but I keep putting off rating it because I'm still not sure how I feel about it, or the series as a whole. I really enjoy the characters, the writing, the humor, and what I refer to as the "surface stories", but I just keep waiting for that other shoe to drop. I feel like there just *has* to be some crazy epic story lurking underneath the surface, and as of book 3, I'm still waiting for it. Sure, there have been hints to it, and in this book we got more than in the first two, but I'm starting to get kind of frustrated and my interest is waning. Which is a shame because technically I really like all of the individual aspects of the series, it just hasn't quite had the oomph that I had been expecting out of it.
I would give this a 3.5. A long, generally fun read, I didn't care for this installation compared to the last two books in the series. I didn't like the play within a book, and wasn't very compelled by the more political story. Also I didn't find Sabetha and Locke's relationship to be that interesting. I just didn't care much. That said, some interesting turns and characters. It was nice to have Calo and Galdo in the flashback story.

I liked the second book a bit better, as it was a bit more adventure-driven, but I really enjoyed the “two stories for the price of one” premise. We finally get to meet Sabatha!!! The ending, especially the epilogue, was so so so cool and I’m YEARNING for the fourth book, which may or may not ever get written, but I’m glad I read the first three regardless!!
