Just not very interesting to me.

I was hungry the whole time I was reading this book. And I wish I had read the actual book instead of listened so I could have ear marked pages

I simply love Stanley Tucci. His descriptions of the food that he makes and eats with his family and for friends is so delightful. He also has an open admiration and is nearly covetous of the cooking of others. I really appreciate his sly sarcasm, at first you wonder - is he kidding? And then you realize, yes he is. Lastly, I have a deep appreciation for the love this author expresses through food and memory. He clearly treasures his family of origin and the family he has created - biologically and through kindred spirit. He is proud of his older children and talks admiringly of their late mother, as well his current spouse with her unique cooking style, and their young children. He truly savors all phases of his life. He shares that he life is very rich indeed. Classy read, I recommend listening to catch his kindness and sass.

This reads like a literal food diary. Cataloging the good (and lots of bad) food he ate in a year.  As charming as I find Tucci, this one is a bore. I recommend his book Taste over this one.

Full disclosure, I found this book incredibly boring and I only finished it to mark one last title off on my reading challenge. I loved Taste and was so looking forward to this, I’m disappointed.

I am a big fan of Stanley Tucci - his movies (do go and see Conclave!), his series Searching For Italy was divine and his memoir, Taste, fabulous. So, I was always going to like this book and like this book I did!

His love of authentic Italian cuisine is obvious, and the attention given in the description of the taste, textures and preparation, not to menton eating, of the food is wonderful but does induce hunger pangs. I truly do not understand how he can eat so much and stay so slim but there you go, some of us have faster metabolisms than others and I think mine is comatose.

Family is another big theme in the book and not surprisingly his family and extensive friend network pop up throughout. It is a delight to read and there are a few recipes included to get you into the kitchen.

There were a few sentences in the book that stood out to me:

"When you look at the mindless repetition of suffering in the world, even a glimmer of hope is hard to find. Human beings need one another because we can give each other so much, especially hope, but we often forget this. Just look at the way we treat each other. We also need the world and what is gives us, but we often forget that too. Just look at the way we treat it."

Food for thought.

A wonderful read.

If you are a fan of Stanley Tucci (as I am), then you will enjoy this quickie, which is essentially a diary of his 2023 - what he did, with whom, and what they ate. I listened to this (love listening to him!) and enjoyed his descriptions. His tone and delivery are impeccable and, while you may not always be totally enthralled by the extensive food descriptions, it’s still fun to listen to / read about them. I listened to this at double speed while I spent a day in my kitchen baking, and it was the perfect accompaniment.

Think of this as a daily diary with food choice included.
