A beautiful, heavy story and memoir of domestic abuse in queer relationships. Anyone with lived experienced around domestic violence will see themselves in this and relate in a way that hurts. The vulnerability is so apparent and I am grateful to Carmen for sharing her story.

finished in a day! telling, capturing, and heartbreaking, this book covers the real mind f*ck of an abusive lesbian relationship. machado weaves together archival knowledge with personal account, providing a deep-cutting, thought-provoking narrative on queer abuse.

This is one of the most captivating books I've ever read. I knew nothing about this going in which honestly was for the best. The writing style is extremely fluid switching between past and present, second and forst person narration. Sometimes throwing you right into a moment and sometimes looking through the lens of time and memory.

In the Dream House takes an unflinching examination of very heavy subjects, especially domestic abuse, reading as part horror story, part diary, part crime case, and part reclamation.

The half star deduction is for a mention of "Israeli couscous" in the Dream House as House in Florida section.

Oh my god. Into The Dream House was my first real depiction of a queer romance that wasn't even close to perfect. As a young lesbian (probably too young to read this book the first time I read it, but oh well), this book gave me a look at what life as a queer woman is like. It's messy and it can be awful, but good god is it real.
