Regarding animal cruelty: there is one scene that could be described as animal cruelty, and it a short quick scene. Spoiler warning to explain the scene -

the author describes living somewhere with pest issues when she found a glue trap with a mouse in it. The scene briefly describes how she kills the mouse. There is not a lot of detail but it did catch me off guard.

An interesting method for an autobiography. Folks who have been in abusive relationships will resonate with some aspects and I appreciated the cultural context for queer DV. The almost poetic inserts were insightful but I could not connect with the author and found her remarkably unlikeable.

The book was Machado's experience of abuse in a lesbian relationship alternating with mini essays and tangents which I skipped. I was more interested in reading about her relationship.

Absolutely love this book. As someone who attending college at the University of Iowa I loved reading this as it takes place in Iowa City at the college. The book almost reads as poetry and is very beautiful written.
