Cute and light
This is one of my favorite books. I've listened to the audiobook at least six times so far, and it's become a comfort read for me (and my husband too). Tsumiko is a wonderful character who is brave and patient and believes in treating everyone with dignity and respect. Argent starts off sarcastic and bitter, but he slowly learns to trust Tsumiko over the course of the story (he's still sarcastic, one of the things I love about him). It's a gentle love-story that has a lot of plot dealing with the way the world is changing around them and is part of a greater story. Ginko, Michael, Sansa, Minx, Akira, Suuzu, and the rest of the secondary cast are also well-developed and characterized, and they also develop and change in response to the situation as it changes.
The worldbuilding is fantastic and expansive, with the magical elements and Amaranthine races coming into the world with full clarity and detail, demonstrating a relatively smooth transition between humanity and new races, guided by people who really care about peace. The entire book revolves around the idea of consent and being able to freely give consent with trust, which is a really important message.
I want to recommend this book to everyone, but I think the best audience is going to be teens and up, as younger audiences might not understand the more adult topics included.

If you have difficulty reading about sexual assault or forced impregnation, this book might be hard for you. Please read with caution - I think it's handled lovingly and with as much kindness as possible, and it was okay for me, but it might still be a hard read. Take care of yourself!

This book was like being taken care of. If you have read the book you'll know. The book was beautiful, peaceful and enticing. Tsumiko and Argent's tale are among my few true favorites, and I will strive in finding a bond such as theirs.

his book was so very interesting, with world-building and characters so unlike any I’ve ever seen before. Of course I added it to my TBR list because Ilona Andrews featured it on a blog post and if Ilona Andrews recommends something you absolutely one-click.
The main protagonists are Tsumiko, who inherits an estate, a fortune, and a person from an aunt she never even knew existed, and Argent, an Amaranthine man who is part of the estate and has been in servitude to the women of Tsumiko’s family for generations. The entire plot of this book focuses around Tsumiko and Argent bonding, falling in love, and looking for a way to break the forcible bond between them and set Argent free. It’s a PNR/Fantasy romance that moves slowly, but captured my attention so fully that I never at anytime wanted to put it down. The world-building is original, the characters vivid and interesting, and the romance between Argent and Tsumiko incredibly romantic. Highly recommend.
Final Grade- A

3.8 stars. At times Tsumiko came across more as an observer than an engaged and emotional participant in the story. Also, some of the decisions were made to drive the Atty forward more than being logical decisions following a crisis. However, the world and the Amaranthine culture are intriguing, so I look forward to the next book
