This book was so close to 4★! My ratings go purely off feeling; more than if a book is actually well written or not. And this book gave me the feeling I get when I like the chemistry between characters. I loved the main couple and the world building. The worlds lore was slightly confusing to me, but I can’t tell if it was because I wasn’t paying enough attention, or because the author truly made a confusing mess of the whole thing.

All the characters had brilliant chemistry and everyone for the most part was pretty likeable- including the FMC which is so rare. She was your basic kind hearted sheltered girl, but for some reason it really didn’t bother me in this book.

However, the whole thing was jeopardised by the strange way the author went about showing the amaranthines’ insistent need to touch. Everyone in this book was just so handsy! And from the start it just felt slightly forced. Plus, it really blurred the lines of some characters interactions which got pretty uncomfortable at time! A lot of the time, I wondered whether the author was trying to hint at deeper relationships between character, or if it was just truly the intimate nature with which the amaranthines interacted. Either way this really brought down the tone of the book for me.

My last complaint was the pacing of relationship progression. I felt the author could’ve done a better job at growing the relationship of the main characters and show a better timeline of their growth in trust and love. I feel like she skipped over too many things, and a lot happened off page.

So all in all, I don’t actually think my rating is justified it’s probably too high, but what I can I say?!

I love this book. I’ve reread it multiple times. Best rec from Ilona Andrews.

My only complaint is I really don’t understand how he got enslaved. The memory is not clear and the breaking scene only hints at dragon involvement. Hopefully it will be answered in future books.

“I don’t understand.” “Which part, miss?”
Tsumiko would have thought it obvious. “How can I inherit a person?”

So, this was a really interesting book. I'll start with saying that despite certain misgivings, I'm interested in finding out what happens next in this well-painted world.

Firstly, the heroine was a little tricky. She's this 20-year-old girl, right? Everyone assumes she's young-minded and naive, but she's inquisitive to the extreme and generally makes sound, thought-out decisions. There is still a certain amount of wide-eyed youth, but it's as if she's got what's called an "old soul"?

The antagonist/hero of the story is introduced as a very wizened, curmudgeonly fellow with an ethereal type of youthfulness in appearance. He's also a Fox in the Japanese-folklore type of way, so he's a trickster on top of everything else.

So, therein lies my scruple. He's too old for her, but it worked in Twilight, right? I thought we were going elsewhere with the romance for a while and I was a little shocked (clutching my pearls) when it started heading that direction. Story-wise, it made perfect sense, though.

This story is focuses on intimacy and trust and needing to rely on those you don't know yet while giving pieces of yourself away. It's pretty powerful when put that way, I think.

The shifters and their needs and how the folklore was weaved into the story was amazing and felt effortless to read. The old politics and magic were at odds with the modern-day world, but I think that's what made it so intriguing finding out what happened next and how people would cope.

The layers regarding most of the characters and how almost-broken they all were in different ways was really compelling, especially when they started to learn from each other and grow as people. I'm definitely interested to see what becomes of some side-characters we were given just a peek at.

I have too many thoughts about this book, but I'll leave it with saying that it reminded me of a romantic Anime or Manga. If you enjoy those, especially the ones with a little magic, this is definitely the book for you.

Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox was a rather interesting read. I liked the world building and the main characters and their families. I also really liked the description of Argent's conservatory. I wish there had been more of an overarching plot; the story felt very episodic, and I felt that some of these "episodes" needed more development/attention.

LOVE AT FIRST READ !!
I must admit that I discovered this book thanks to Ilona Andrews (<3) who recommended it and I SO LOVE it !!!

What I particularly liked :
- the universe which is very rich with the Emergence which allowed the revelation of the Amaranthines who are people having a human form and a more "animal" form (fox, cat, dog ...) and the reavers who are a bit like the wizards making it possible to protect the humans against the Amaranthines. I am simplifying it but in reality, it's much more complex with different kinds of reavers, the fact that they can feed the Amaranthine with their souls, that there are different clans with a lot of political machinations on the background of revelation of their existences but also those of hybrids ... In short I had a huge crush on the Amaranthines and their customs ><
- the characters who were THE crush of the book : Argent enchanted me from the beginning to the end, it's a character so complex with his defects, his nobility and his inhumanity but also so endearing (I totally fell in love <3) I also loved Tsumiko and her calm, her convictions and also her slightly sarcastic side >< And both of them together ... AHHHH <3
- the plot with the mysterious dragon and the enslavement of Argent

Two caveats : I would have liked to have answers for the story of the mysterious dragon and I would have wanted a second book still with Tsumiko (although considering the summary of the second book, I feel that I will love it =D)
In short, fans of mythology, Japan and original characters, this book is for you!

The first half of this was really a really easy read. The characters were fascinating and their .. slightly dodgy antics were titillating and endearing. I was really enjoying the story until it hit a point about three quarters in where the pace seemed to hitch and things started lacking urgency.

Either my caffeine levels were running low of my patience with the book began to ebb as I started to tire. Just as new and interesting characters are introduced, I think perhaps my interest was dwindling as the main characters worked toward something that _they_ thought was important that I really couldn't be bothered with. I have a lot more time for personal affection than for the trappings of custom, so perhaps what some may find romantic and endearing was frankly ... dull as dishwater to me. I felt that for a story with such a strong start, the end of this section ends, a bit deflated.

This was tropey AF; the main character lacked substance or agency. Massive issues around consent are not addressed. Nope. Nope.
