This is the first book I’ve ever read from the perspective of India. I’m proud to say I found it in my school’s library (thanks, Kim!). I learned so much - I had no idea what this part of the world was like in the 40’s.

This is a gorgeous exploration of the power of youth in activism. Set in India in the 1940s, Anjali's mother heeds Gandhiji's call to the freedom movement and Anjali is proud to learn alongside her. This is a deeply inspiring story about what is worth fighting for.

It is difficult to explain just how much I loved this book. It had me tearing up with joy, hope, sadness, anger, despair, disbelief, relief, etc. This is a book that is like a hug; something comforting with a guaranteed joyous result. I will reread this again and again.

This book completely blew me away. A definite "window" book for me as it taught me about a time in history that I really did not have much information about. A book you will want for upper middle grade libraries.

I'm very here for all of these middle grade books set all over the world. WINDOWS AND MIRRORS!!!

A great story about one girl grappling with how to understand India's bid for independence, social class, and the importance of education. So much going on here! Would make a good read aloud or book club pick.

Not only a great history lesson on British colonization of India and conflict between Hindi & Muslim factions in the early 20th century, but an inspiring story of a girl who learns to stand up not only for herself, but for those who were denied the right to education and other freedoms due to the caste system.
